US GI entrenching tool for hard or frozen ground. Upper, assembled for use and, lower, disassembled for transport.

US GI entrenching tool for softer ground. Upper, folded for transport and, lower, in folded or "pick" configuration. Tool can also be opened fully into the "shovel" configuration.

lower tool is the early one for the Garand rifle and the upper one, with the chamber brush, is the later one.
